McLean/McLay Family Gathering
Saturday, 6 August 2016 – 12pm to 2pm
Lochgelly Centre, Bank Street, Lochgelly, KY5 9RD

Dear Fellow McLean

Are you a descendent of Alexander McLay (later McLean) and Helen Hay, married in Dunfermline in 1674. If so we would love to meet you to share family memories and perhaps add a few ancestors to their family tree.

Over the last 10 years fellow McLeans we have been meeting in Fife and around 15 family members from Scotland, the US and Canada have attended and it is hoped that 2016 will see even more descendents in attendance.

This year the McLean/McLay 2016 Family Gathering will take place at the Lochgelly Centre on Saturday, 6 August between 12pm and 2pm. Family from all over the world including Australia, Germany, Canada, America and the UK will be there.

The event is organized by William “Bill” McLean of New Jersey, USA and Keith and Alicia McLean of Dunbar, East Lothian (Bill and Keith are 5th cousins with a common relative in the 1820’s). They first met up via the internet some 13 years ago and have gone on to strike up a lasting friendship. They are both very keen genealogists and are eager to try and piece together how their families would have lived in Lochgelly and the surrounding areas of Fife prior to Bill’s father emigrating to the United States in the late 1920’s as a child.

The family were primarily related to the coal mining industry as miners from the 1600’s until the mines were closed. Some of the family through the years maintained the original McLay surname but most had changed to McLean. It is suspected that many McLean’s in Fife, and especially in the Dunfermline, Lochgelly and Leslie area, are descendants of Alexander and Helen.

The informal gathering welcomes all who know, suspect or are curious about whether they are related to this family. People will be able to have their connection questions answered. Light refreshments will be served and there is no charge. If you would like to know more about the gathering or have any questions please email Bill McLean ( or call Keith and Alicia McLean on 07898 858856 or email on ( for more information.

We look forward to welcoming you all and hope we can help you with your part of the family tree.
