The residents have been providing support to the committee to help refurbish the railings, carry out some weeding, picking up litter and any other work required to help maintain the war memorial. One of the residents, George Elder, former Secretary of the Lochgelly Community Council stated; ‘refurbishing an historic and sensitive structure like this is not something we can undertake without expert guidance, however volunteers can do their bit by general maintenance such as weeding and painting‘ George has already removed the paint flakes and treated the rust of the back railings, and then re-painted the railings as can be seen below in the before and after images: Before War Memorial – Rust on railing After War Memorial – back railings re-painted The volunteers have now started on the front railings to remove the flaked paint and treat the rust, before painting the railings. ‘We would ask residents to be patient with us, we are doing this with any spare time we have, but weather willing, will be finished in the next few weeks.‘ War Memorial Railings – Treated for rust before re-painting The volunteers are hoping to have the railings treated and re-painted within the next two weeks. Any resident that wishes to help with the painting, or other future planned maintenance work, should contact George on 01592 782 657.
