Creative Ageing – Drawings and Paintings by Joyce Gunn Cairns

Monday 14th October – Friday 20th December 2013

FifeSpace Gallery, Lochgelly Centre

Creative Ageing is a solo exhibition by highly regarded Scottish artist Joyce Gunn Cairns. Taking place under the auspices of Luminate, Scotland’s Creative Ageing Festival, the display will feature images of people who are ageing creatively, notably, friends of the artist, actors and writers.

Gunn Cairns was awarded an MBE for services to the arts in June 2004. Scottish National Gallery Senoir Curator, Julie Lawson said of her work:

‘ For Gunn Cairns, it is not the drawing for its own sake that matters – rather, the drawing process is a form of dialogue with another. The portrait drawing is what emerges.’

Creative Ageing Event – Saturday 26th October 12noon – 8pm – Lochgelly Centre

Admission Free

You are warmly invited to attend!

Centred around the above exhibition, the event will include readings from authors, Christine De Luca and Bashabi Fraser, as well as craft demonstrations and a theatre performance.

There will be a special viewing of the exhibition at 2.30pm and Joyce Gunn Cairns will talk about the development of this, her latest body
of work.

‘The sense of absence in my life intensifies as I grow older. Loss through death or separation seems ever more prevalent.

This painting speaks of the comfort we can gain from the intimacy of friendship. Friendship is important throughout life, but perhaps we become more acutely aware of the need for friendship, and enjoy and appreciate it more keenly, when we face the vulnerabilities which are an inevitable part of growing older.

Drawing Heads, – and Alastair Gray

Alastair Gray

Regular sittings with writers, poets and actors over a period of thirty years has been a leitmotif in my struggle – often painful , sometimes joyful – towards a sense of myself as an artist; if, that is, myself as artist concerns process as much as it concerns end product. My drawing skill may have improved a little over the years as a consequence of disciplined application, but such improvement is almost incidental to the privilege and sheer pleasure of spending time in the company of so many talented and entertaining people. Alasdair Gray as a sitter is as good an example as any!
