This article was written by Sandra Macrae from Campbell Macrae Associates which is a small but well established firm of economic development consultants.

Last year the Lochgelly Charrette devised a master plan to guide the future development of Lochgelly. One of the key short term projects is to investigate new uses for the disused but historic and highly visible St Andrews Church on Bank Street as it was felt that this building could make a positive contribution to the revitalisation of Lochgelly.

Several uses have already been suggested including an indoor market, recording studio, artist’s workshops, children’s play centre and youth club/centre. Sandra Macrae of Campbell Macrae Associates has been appointed by Fife Council to explore potential new uses for St Andrews Church. Sandra says “new uses of St Andrews Church must be sustainable in the longer term and ideally should appeal to a wide cross section of the local community. They should also complement rather than compete with other local facilities”.

Sandra is keen to hear from anyone with a view on how St Andrews Church could be developed in the future and also to identify potential users including new or existing groups, individuals or businesses. Sandra’s e-mail is sandra@campbellmacrae.co.uk

Admin Note: If anyone has their own ideas on how the church can be used, you can leave your comments below and we will forward them on to Sandra.

There’s a smashing hall in the church, it would be great for running all sorts of classes, it can be hired out, or part subsidised with charity funds, etc. Since the closure of the Centre there has been almost nothing in Lochgelly, and the High School isn’t suitable for all. You could have dance classes, gymnastics, etc., classes for all ages…open a canteen…an art gallery…it can be a meeting place for all types of groups…a proper community meeting place, an all-day cafe, a drop-in centre…endless possibilities.
