We have been doing some minor tweaks to the website and adding some new features, as well as testing many more. We would also like to take the opportunity to update everyone of recent developments on the site.

We have found that this site has grown quite rapidly in terms of content and site visitors in a short space of time, so people seem to value the service we are providing. However, it has been pointed out to us, that we should be thinking of ways to make this site sustainable, to ensure its survival and remain a centralised community asset for Lochgelly.

This has led to our first change and that is the inclusion of Business listings, whereby, local private (for profit) businesses can advertise themselves on this site for a fee, at a very competitive rate. Any profit raised will be reinvested into the site to cover running costs, upgrade or purchase additional equipment.

To ensure transparency on how monies are being spent we will publish a quarterly report detailing on how much money has been raised and details of how the money has been spent.

As this is an informal non profit project, any excess cash that we manage to raise, we will publish details of the amount, and let you decide on how this money should be spent within the locality. This will usually be in the form of a cash donation to a local non profit project operating within Lochgelly.

New Features

Out with our Business listings page you may have noticed, we added a new script to the site provided by WOT (Web Of Trust – www.mywot.com). This handy little script warns users of the safety of external links by providing a little coloured circle, next to any external links. We only link to sites that have been given a green rating which means the site is considered safe to browse. We do link to the occasional site that has a grey circle, this usually means the site is either quite new or just hasn’t been rated yet.

Categories Inclusion: We have been excluding the following categories (Internet & Computing, Web News, Website Design) from our main page of posts, as we didn’t want this content to interfere with the content about Lochgelly. It has been pointed out to us though that this isn’t really visible to the casual site visitor and these posts do contain some useful information on computer safety and good practice. We have now added these categories so that all site posts will be visible on the main page.

Feedback: We have added a new section titled Feedback, this section is basically an online letters page, allowing you to have your say on anything you want about Lochgelly.

Admin Update: We have removed the feedback section in favour of a Forum as we believe this will be easier to manage. You can view the forum at: http://lochgelly.org.uk/?page_id=2232

Future Developments

Two new features we would like to add to the site are:

  1. Free Classified Ads: This would allow local people within Lochgelly and the surrounding areas post stuff for sale and stuff needed. We would also add a free to collect section based on the FreeCycle model. All ads will be free to post by the local community. Businesses will not be allowed to post here.
  2. Events Calendar: Registered users will be able to add their own events to the calendar and raise awareness of any local activities for the local community.

These features will only be added if you support them and would like to see this development on the site, so we have 2 polls below that we will be running for the next month to gather your feedback and to find out if these are features that you would like to see and use on the site, so please give your votes.
