We have read a recent report on the BBC website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/10143746.stm) where a women was offered £200 by the non profit group from the USA, Project Prevention.
Ms Wilson said the women told her they were from Project Prevention, a US group which pays drug addicts to be voluntarily sterilised……….”As we left the health centre I saw three ladies coming out of a car and they told me there was this new scheme, offering £200. Then I saw a bit of paper in her hand and it had drug addicts written on it. I’m not a addict. I think I was approached because I was in the Possilpark area – it’s a well-known area for drugs – but that’s where my doctor is based.”
While it is a sad fact that there is many babies born drug dependent, surely they have a right to life, as much as anyone else? Surely to tackle these issues, money should be spent in tackling the root causes of drug dependency, rather than a blanket sterilisation programme, which reminded us of a Nazi policy.
Life Unworthy of Life
Project Prevention seem to operate on the basis of Life Unworthy of Life, and only differ from the Third Reich, by offering money for “voluntary” sterilisation. However this voluntary sterilisation according to the BBC report sounded more like “peer pressure” as there was 3 women, trying to encourage Ms Wilson to be sterilised.
Is there anyone on the planet that is qualified enough to decide who is unworthy of life? No, as all humans are basically flawed and governed by their own ideals, whether these ideals are right or wrong. In a caring and humane society such as the UK, we invest money in rehabilitation and education.
Addaction firmly believes that there is no place for Project Prevention in the UK because their practices are morally reprehensible and irrelevant. Sex education and contraceptive advice is part of drug treatment work in this country. Women who use drugs can access all types of contraception free on the NHS including a number of long term options……….Our first-hand experience shows that people can make positive changes with the right support – both for themselves and for their children. In fact, many of our clients stopped using drugs because they became a parent.
Quite simply, their policy of sterilisation is abhorrent. Sterilisation is always an issue that needs careful consent and the coercive influence of a financial incentive in a group of women usually living in poverty places it ethically beyond the pale.
Luckily, there is many organisations in the UK, opposed to this non profit which seems to disregard peoples right to life, and second chances, and hopefully by advertising this insidious organisation, we can help raise awareness of the unethical practices of this organisation, and hopefully add to the growing voices of concern that would like this organisation removed from UK shores.
Where does it end?
So if this kind of non profit is tolerated in the UK, where does it all end? Sterilisation of parents living in inappropriate housing, sterilisation of parents with anger issues, sterilisation of any undesirable person.
We have also noted from their website that they are not just tackling drug addiction through sterilisation but the prevention of social delinquency and violent crime are also high on their agenda.
We do not believe it is socially acceptable in the UK to offer drug addicts money to be sterilised, when there is many free resources available through the NHS and other non profit groups to help people beat their drug addiction. The strategy of offering £200 for drug addicts to undergo sterilisation is coercive, cynical and exploitative strategy being used against people that may be quite desperate for money.
Project Prevention – The Founder
The founder of the US Charity is Barbara Harris who goes by the name ‘BlessedBarbara’ on twitter, whom attempted (and failed) to pass a bill in California making sterilisation, compulsory and enforceable. This worrying piece of information is definitely a throw back from the Nazi Third Reich programme for Euginics which is the self direction of human evolution, which led to the Holocaust in Germany.
An interesting interview with Barbara Harris can be watched on BBC iPlayer located at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00sj25f/HARDtalk_Barbara_Harris_founder_Project_Prevention/
This organisation should not be tolerated in the UK, any organisation that advocates sterilisation or eugenics, under the thinly disguised veil of compassion, should not even be allowed to operate within this country, and hopefully there will be enough of an outcry that will stop Project Prevention from operating within the UK.
Project Prevention are not helping to support drug rehabilitation but are merely stigmatising vulnerable women, who are already stigmatised by society. As for offering money for sterilisation, this is using financial incentives, to people that are often financially unsecure to coerce sterilisation and in our opinion, no different from forced sterilisation perpetuated by the Nazi regime.

We have not linked to Project Preventions website because we believe their mission to sterilise women is morally, and ethically wrong, and we have no wish to provide them extra traffic to their site so they can spread their message of hate.
