Fife Fire & Rescue

.Lochgelly is home to one of six full-time Fire Stations, that service the Kingdom of Fife. The Station is located on Lumphinnans Road and covers a mobilising area which includes 18,131 domestic and 1129 non-domestic properties. The Station houses two fire engines and the Service’s Emergency Tender.

Background Information

Founded under the auspices of the Fire Services Act 1947, Fife Fire and Rescue Service was created from the former Fife Fire Brigade in 1985. This name change reflected the Brigade’s increasing role in rescues from non-fire incidents such as road traffic accidents, flooding and chemical spills.

Fife is one of Scotland’s ancient Kingdoms and covers an area of some 1300 square kilometres, with a population of approximately 354,600. Fife Fire and Rescue Service currently employs approximately 550 members of staff. Fire cover for the Kingdom is provided by six Wholetime (full time) stations covering the more populous areas of Dunfermline, Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy, Lochgelly, Methil and Rosyth. The more rural areas of Fife are protected by eight Retained (part time) stations located at Anstruther, Auchtermuchty, Burntisland, Cupar, Newburgh, St. Andrews, St. Monans and Tayport.

Local Community Safety Initiatives

Personnel from Lochgelly Fire station have worked hard to develop engagement with local primary schools through the Lochgelly Garden project. Funded locally, fire crews work with the children planting, growing and harvesting a range of vegetables and floral displays. A novel approach has also been taken this year to delivering the fire safety message in the lead up to the school summer holidays; working within the framework of the Local Area Safety Coordination group, Fire Crews have worked closely with Fife Police and Community Wardens to reduce the number of secondary fires during the summer period.
