Lochgelly Albert Junior Football Club

Lochgelly Albert located at Gardners Park up at South Street, adjacent to Watters Crescent is the local football team and provides a good resource for the local youths to participate in local sports.

Lochgelly Albert played their first march in 1933 and has been running a good team ever since. Lochgelly Albert nowadays relies on sponsorship to sustain the club, with the main sponsorship from local business, Purvis Plant Hire.

Their currently is 2 theories listed on their website for where the name Lochgelly Albert derives from, with the most popular theory quoted below:

The 2nd theory and probably the most respected, is that the club took it’s name from a town that was unlucky enough to be on the SOMME front during the Great War of 1914-1918. It is well known that more than a few young men from Lochgelly not only fought, but perished, at the front line of the SOMME. It is reported that most of the soldiers were at some time stationed in a town called ALBERT in northern France and a few not only played football before the war, but after hostilities had ceased set about founding a local team in Lochgelly. This may have been done to try and replace the local senior team Lochgelly United who had disbanded just before the outbreak of the war.

Lochgelly Albert is an excellent community resource, as well as providing for the locallity, they have also developed connections in Gambia, and in 2005 helped support a Gambian football team in West Africa, named Gambian Lochgelly Albert.
